Week2:Thai King,Bhumibol,die

Death of Thailand’s King Bhumibol Spells Period of Uncertainty

UPDATED: The world’s longest reigning monarch, Thailand’s King Bhumibol Adulyadej died Thursday aged 88.
The Nation announced his death with the headline: “Nation Weeps Over His Majesty’s Departure.” The Bangkok Post said: “HM The King Passes Away.
The news briefly crashed some websites. BBC television reports were blocked.
King Bhumibol had reigned for some seven decades and was widely regarded as a father figure in the middle income South East Asian nation. Many in Thailand considered him to be a god. There will now be a year long period of mourning starting Oct. 14. Many educational and entertainment sites will be closed in the near time.
King Bhumibol died after a prolonged period of illness– recent medical bulletins pointed to respiratory problems as well as kidney and liver troubles – and he has rarely been seen in public for years.
His death will – at best — mean a period of political, cultural and economic uncertainty. The prospect of worse outcomes, including civil unrest or fighting, is real. Crown Prince Maha Vajiralongkorn has now been proclaimed as the new King.
While King Bhumibol was alive most political and social groups felt an obligation to maintain some kind of social compact, even if this has meant bowing down to a military regime which deposed a civilian government in 2014.
Without the respected figure of the King, it will be difficult to keep a lid on all of the different forces that could re-emerge or be created in the aftermath.
These include: tussles between monarchists and democrats; battles between Bangkok based elites and the poorly educated masses, especially in the North of the country; the possible return of exiled former prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra; armed Muslim separatists in the deep South of the country; and between traditional religious groups and secular modernizers.
The military junta which goes by the name of National Council for Peace and Order has offered an anti-corruption drive as a fig leaf of credibility for engineering Thailand’s 12th military coup since the end of the absolute monarchy in 1932.
Whether the NCPO has reduced corruption or merely replaced its chain of command is a moot point. It has certainly proved deeply illiberal; increasing censorship, reducing free expression and wielding draconian ‘lese majeste’ laws to silence even the mildest critics. All that supposedly in order to build a regime strong enough to withstand the upcoming explosions.
There is also the unedifying prospect of a battle for succession within the Thai royal family. As heir apparent Crown Prince Maha Vajiralongkorn was not popular. He currently appears to have the support of the NCPO, but it is possible that the generals may oversee an enforced abdication and handover of the monarchy within a couple of years to sister, Crown Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn.
The uncertainties are likely to have effects on the Thai economy which is a major food exporter, a major manufacturing sub-contractor (especially for Japanese and Korean cars and electronics firms), a top tourist destination and a facilities hub for the film industry in the region.
After remaining strong for most of the past year, the Thai currency weakened 3% in early October as palace bulletins on King Bhumibol’s health became bleaker.
Further uncertainty would increase the risks of doing business in Thailand, while further falls in the value of the Baht would make it cheaper. Nevertheless, for tourists and film makers the choice of staying away for a while would be a relatively easy one.

Week1:same sex marriage

Neil Gorsuch: Supreme Court has said same-sex marriage is 'protected by the Constitution

Supreme Court nominee Neil Gorsuch, pressed about his record on LGBTQ rights, said Tuesday the top court has ruled that the Constitution protects same-sex marriage.
During the second day of Gorsuch's Senate confirmation hearings, the 49-year-old conservative appeals judge defended his work amid concerns from some Democrats and progressive groups about his potential effect on LGBTQ rights. Sen. Dick Durbin, D-Ill., questioned Gorsuch about his claims that he applied equal protection to all people.
"What about LGBTQ individuals?" Durbin asked.
"What about them? They're people," Gorsuch said.
"Of course," Durbin said. "What you said earlier was that you had a record of speaking out, standing up for those minorities who you believe are not being treated fairly. Can you point to statements or cases you've ruled on relative to that class?"
"Senator, I've tried to treat each case and each person as a person — not a 'this kind of person,' not a 'that kind of person' — a person. Equal justice under law. It is a radical promise in the history of mankind," Gorsuch said.
"Does that refer to sexual orientation, as well?" Durbin asked.
"Senator, the Supreme Court of the United States has held that single-sex marriage is protected by the Constitution," Gorsuch responded.
In the landmark 2015 Obergefell v. Hodges ruling, the top U.S. court recognized in a 5-4 decision the right for same-sex couples to marry. The late Justice Antonin Scalia, whom Gorsuch has called an inspiration, wrote a dissenting opinion. Gorsuch is being considered for the seat left vacant by Scalia's death last year.
Republicans hold 52 seats in the 100-member chamber, and may need at least eight Democratic votes to confirm Gorsuch if they decide not to trigger a "nuclear option" rules change that would only require a majority. Many Democrats have dug in against confirming Gorsuch after Republicans did not hold a hearing for Merrick Garland, whom President Barack Obama nominated for the same seat.

week9:south china sea dispute

The South China Sea dispute have been paused — between the PH and China — following the Philippines and Beijing’s new ties. Unlike the impending war that surrounds the contested islands before, different countries are now sailing freely in the South China seas.
On January 4, Wednesday, a group of Chinese warships, led by its sole aircraft carrier reportedly carried out weapon and equipment drills in the South China Sea. The Liaoning ship, in particular, led the exercises being held since last month. According to China, the Soviet-built Liaoning, and all the other ships conduct routine exercises that comply with international law.
“The Liaoning aircraft carrier group in the South China Sea is carrying out scientific research and training, in accordance with plans,” Geng Shuang, Chinese foreign ministry spokesman, said during a news briefing. “The purpose is to test the performance of weapons and equipment.”
The United States’ warships have also conducted “freedom of navigations” patrols through the contested waters. That activity, which started last year, is due to the growing concern about a Chinese construction of air strips and docks on the disputed islands.
Meanwhile, another US rival visited Asia’s Philippines in a bid to strengthen military ties. CNN reports that two Russian warships landed in the PH this week as Moscow is also eyeing to play a big part in the disputed waters. On Tuesday, both the Russian sea tanker Boris Butomato and destroyer Admiral Tributs both arrived in Manila for what the Philippine Navy noted as a “goodwill visit.”
According to Lued Lincuna, Philippine Navy public affairs officer, there would be no joint exercises in the next five days.  However, the two countries are till having talks whether to hold future joint exercises. On the other hand, a Russian site called RT.com, said that the “Russian marines are expected to discuss and share tactics” with plans toward future joint exercises.
The Philippine president Rodrigo Duterte have been vocal about how he wants Russia’s military support. Additionally, he also eyes to purchase arms in the Putin- lead country.

week8:pokemo go

Pedestrian deaths spiked to a 25-year high in Minnesota in 2016, illustrating what’s been a grim upward trend across the country in recent years. Experts tie it to more people driving and to more distractions such as smartphones that draw the attention of drivers and pedestrians away from the road.
Here’s a look at the issue and what’s being done to address it:

THE PROBLEM

Traffic deaths of all kinds have been rising nationally since 2009, but pedestrian deaths have been rising faster, and they have made up a growing share of all traffic deaths. According to the National Safety Council, they’ve risen from 4,109 in 2009, when they were 12 percent of all traffic deaths, to 5,376 in 2015, when they were 15 percent of the total. In California and New York state, pedestrian deaths make up about a fourth of the total.
National statistics for 2016 haven’t been compiled yet, and a sampling of preliminary data from a few states gives a mixed picture. Sixty pedestrians were killed in Minnesota in 2016, a steep climb from 17 in 2014 and 41 in 2015, according to preliminary figures from the state Department of Public Safety.
Among four big states that accounted for over 40 percent of the country’s pedestrian fatalities in 2015, the trend continued upward in Texas, which recorded 623 by Dec. 22, compared with 559 in all of 2015. California, which leads the nation in pedestrian deaths, saw a dramatic 42 percent rise from 596 in 2009 to 849 in 2015, although preliminary numbers for the first half of 2016 showed a 13 percent decrease compared with the same period in 2015. Preliminary figures from Florida show a dip to 582 last year after 632 in 2015. New York state has bucked the national trend for a few years; it was down to a preliminary 223 last year from 307 in 2015.

WHAT’S DRIVING THE INCREASE?

People are driving more as the economy improves, so more pedestrians are getting hit. Distracted drivers and pedestrians are another factor, said Kenneth Kolosh, statistics manager at the National Safety Council. Smartphone apps and texting take focus away from the road, he said. Even talking on a cellphone with a hands-free setup can be distracting.
“It’s hard to pinpoint causation, but we know that more people are walking, jogging and running more miles than ever for both recreation/health and just basic getting from place to place,” said Chris Cochran, spokesman for the California Office of Traffic Safety. “We know that drivers are increasingly more distracted, especially by mobile technology, plus there is more speeding. And we know that pedestrians are increasingly also distracted by mobile technology, plus more jaywalking and nighttime walking.”

WHAT’S BEING DONE?

The National Safety Council and federal agencies in October announced a campaign aimed at eliminating all traffic deaths and injuries within 30 years. It includes a push for self-driving cars. In November, the agency proposed voluntary guidelines to encourage electronic device developers to design products that limit the time a driver’s eyes are off the road.
There are also some local initiatives, such as one in New York City that combines educational outreach to walkers with enforcement focused on speeding, yielding to pedestrians in crosswalks and compliance with traffic signs and signals. Mayor Bill de Blasio credits it with reducing the city’s pedestrian deaths to 135 in 2015, the lowest since record-keeping began in 1910.

IS POKEMON GO PART OF THE PROBLEM?

Pokemon Go, in which players roam the real world while searching out digital monsters via GPS, was widely blamed as a potential distraction hazard after its release in July. But a search of news articles turned up only one pedestrian fatality in the U.S., involving a 14-year-old player in suburban Detroit who was killed in October by an allegedly drunk motorcyclist. A second fatality involving someone playing the game occurred in August in Japan.
Phoning and texting while driving or walking are considered bigger problems.

Virtual Reality: An Emerging Game Changer In Healthcare

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/advertising-week/virtual-reality-an-emergi_b_13343112.html

   Virtual Emergency Room

Collaborating with academics and healthcare experts at Ohio University, Northern Arizona University, and OhioHealth, our Immersive Media Initiative is creating a virtual trauma bay for pennies on the dollar compared to the real thing.
Imagine putting on a headset and immediately you are in a trauma bay with real patients.  You can hear and see everything just by turning your head:  the patient, the medical team, and the equipment.  You are there.  By spring, the next class of emergency room physicians will be able to participate in this sort of training.
With 360-degree video, the viewer is in control of what is being watched, and when.  Imagine being able to freeze an image at any point during a live trauma and then being able to look around and observe important elements of the room:  the medical monitors, the patient, or the professionals.
The audio is immersive as well.  You hear the monitors behind you, and can look and see them.  Cross talk between team members is crystal clear.  If you want to isolate on the head nurse’s interaction with the team, you can do that. Then you can watch the whole trauma again, this time from the perspective of the head surgeon.
Virtual trauma room training brings three important cost-effective benefits to healthcare:
• First, it helps acclimate newcomers to a stressful, chaotic job setting that has low tolerance for error.
• Second, it allows students to experience the realities of the emergency room without getting in the way or putting others at risk.
• And third, it allows experienced professionals to assess their work in a way that hasn’t been possible before.  It’s like post-game analysis, on steroids.

WATCH LEONARDO DICAPRIO'S 2016 OSCAR ACCEPTANCE SPEECH FOR BEST ACTOR

http://oscar.go.com/news/winners/watch-leonardo-dicaprios-acceptance-speech-for-best-actor-2016

Leonardo DiCaprio's Oscar acceptance speech was certainly one for the record books.  After six previous Academy Award nominations, DiCaprio finally joined the ranks of Oscar winners and took home the 2016 Oscar for Best Actor in a Leading Role.  DiCaprio, now 41, was first nominated in 1993 at the ripe age of 19 for Best Supporting Actor for his work in What's Eating Gilbert Grape.  Since then, he's been nominated for The Wolf of Wall Street (2013 Nominee, Actor in a Leading Role), Blood Diamond (2006 Nominee, Actor in a Leading Role), and The Aviator (2004 Nominee, Actor in a Leading Role).
Full transcript:
Thank you all so very much. Thank you to the Academy, thank you to all of you in this room. I have to congratulate the other incredible nomineesthis year for their unbelievable performances. The Revenant was the product of the tireless efforts of an unbelievable cast and crew I got to work alongside. First off, to my brother in this endeavor, Mr. Tom Hardy. Tom, your fierce talent on screen can only be surpassed by your friendship off screen. To Mr. Alejandro Innaritu, as the history of cinema unfolds, you have forged your way into history these past 2 years... thank you for creating a transcendent cinematic experience. Thank you to everybody at Fox and New Regency…my entire team. I have to thank everyone from the very onset of my career…to Mr. Jones for casting me in my first film to Mr. Scorsese for teaching me so much about the cinematic art form. To my parents, none of this would be possible without you. And to my friends, I love you dearly, you know who you are.
And lastly I just want to say this: Making The Revenant was about man's relationship to the natural world. A world that we collectively felt in 2015 as the hottest year in recorded history. Our production needed to move to the southern tip of this planet just to be able to find snow. Climate change is real, it is happening right now. It is the most urgent threat facing our entire species, and we need to work collectively together and stop procrastinating. We need to support leaders around the world who do not speak for the big polluters, but who speak for all of humanity, for the indigenous people of the world, for the billions and billions of underprivileged people out there who would be most affected by this. For our children’s children, and for those people out there whose voices have been drowned out by the politics of greed. I thank you all for this amazing award tonight. Let us not take this planet for granted. I do not take tonight for granted. Thank you so very much.
